VISY RECYCLING

In 1948, Visy began as a manufacturer of corrugated cardboard boxes in Melbourne and has grown to become one of the world's leading packaging, paper and recycling companies.

Visy provides customers with innovative and sustainably-focused packaging and recycling solutions. Our solutions are designed to meet the needs of a variety of industries and products, while efficiently using and reusing scarce resources.

Visy supplies some of the world’s best known brands, providing packaging that preserves, protects and enhances their products. More than 98% of the packaging we create for our customers is widely recyclable.

Visy runs collection and recycling services across Australia and New Zealand, thereby helping to reduce waste going to landfill and reduce the use of water and energy. We have been at the forefront of recycling in Australia for many years, collecting from more than 3 million households in 2009-10, in addition to businesses, hospitals and schools to reduce the environmental footprint we all make.

In 2009-10, Visy produced 700,000 tonnes of fibre packaging, 600 million steel food cans, 2.1 billion PET containers, 1.2 million beverage cans, 800 million beverage cartons and 1,800 tonnes of food plastics. We also recovered more than 1.5 million tonnes of paper and cardboard; 500,000 tonnes of glass; 60,000 tonnes of plastics and 26,000 tonnes of metals including aluminium and steel cans.

Through our Enviromaniacs school education program and activities in partnership with local councils, Visy continues to educate the community about ‘best practice’ recycling to ensure a better world.

THE OFFICE OF ENVIRONMENT AND HERITAGE (OEH)

The Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH) is a separate office within the NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet.

OEH is working towards a healthy environment cared for and enjoyed by the whole NSW community. By working in partnership with local government, industry, conservation groups, the farming sector and the community we are delivering programs that support sustainable consumption; resource conservation; management of biodiversity; waste and recycling management; water and energy efficiency.

The NSW Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Strategy provides the essential framework for improving the management of waste to drive waste avoidance and resource recovery and the efficient use of resources. It sets goals and targets to be reached by 2014.

The Reducing Waste: Implementation Strategy 2011-2015 was released in March 2011. It features revised strategies to make it easier for households and businesses to recycle, reduce littering, increase producer responsibility for problem wastes, and increase investment in waste infrastructure.

Starting with the idea of avoiding the creation of waste in the first place, the Implementation Strategy’s effectiveness depends on action at all levels of government, industry and the broader community.

Reducing the generation of waste and turning it into recoverable resources are priorities for NSW.
